Bedford Morris  -  Bamberg Visit

Bedford Morris Men visited Bamberg as guests of Der Regnitztaler.

Bedford Morris Men were invited to visit Bedford's Twin Town, Bamberg by Der Regnitztaler, a traditional costume and dance group.  The Bedford Morris Men [often accompanied by Bedford Fine Companions] and Der Regnitztaler have been making exchange visits for many years, and some solid friendships have developed.

A representative group made a 3a.m. start and drove from Bedford to Bamberg, picking up Antony Heywood [Greensleeves/Helmond MM] near Eindhoven and Keith MacDonald [BMM/Chanctonbury Ring MM] in Frankfurt [both of whom are thanked for their support and without whom we would not have been quorate].

We arrived in Bamberg for a welcome evening meal [and other “refreshments”] at the Regnitztaler Alm [clubhouse], and were later taken to our hotel - after which we were driven everywhere, and did not have to think until Sunday morning!

On the Saturday morning, we danced in Bamberg by the Fountain.  This was followed by a reception at the Rathaus.  In the afternoon, we busked at a hilltop “tearoom”; that evening there was a party at the Alm with music and dance.

All these activities were interspersed with copious food [and - did we mention? - drinks!!], we naturally sampled the local speciality Rauchbier [smoked beer].

During Saturday evening we entertained each other at a magnificent party at the Regnitztaler Alm.

Departure on Sunday   Our thanks to the following for the use of their photographs:
Antony Heywood; Thomas Hollfelder; Jenny Schweim; Keith MacDonald and John Frearson.
A farewell from out hosts before we drive back to England

On Sunday the Men returned to Bedford after four excellent days with our most generous hosts - we even fitted in a few dances - as they say “someone has to do it !”

The visit would not have been possible without the generosity of our hosts the Regnitztaler, and we thank them all and particularly their Chairman, Manfred Weißhaar.  They provided accommodation - and indeed, arranged everything else, during our visit.  We also thank the Bamberg Council for receiving us during the visit and thank their representative [and Ragnitztaler member] H. Bertram Weißhaar.  We are very grateful and look forward to returning their outstanding hospitality.
